A prep school where happiness gets results!

At Coworth Flexlands, we have built a whole-school ethos around the foundations of wellbeing and happiness. Happier children are healthier, learn better and display more emotional literacy. Emotional literacy is important for developing self-confidence, boosting self-esteem, social and emotional development, and encouraging emotional self-management.

What makes Coworth Flexlands a 'Happy' School....

We have developed a culture of happiness, with strategies for well-being and support. Inspiring Minds and Nurturing Spirit is at the heart of the school's approach.

We focus on the 'whole' child - their intellectual, physical, social and emotional wellbeing needs, The whole child approach works on the basis that every child should be happy, healthy, safe, engaged, supported and challenged to grow in their educational environment.

We promote a culture that ensures pupils are given time to develop their interests and learn the wider skills required of them in a safe and supportive environment, while still being academically engaged and challenged.

We encourage open communication between pupils, teachers and parents with assemblies and an engaging weekly newsletter, as well as an open-door policy.

We have created a positive environment, both physically and emotionally. Each class has tools in place for pupils to share pastoral concerns, feelings and thoughts either anonymously or directly with the teacher. We have a well-being drop-in twice per week for our Prep pupils and a mentoring programme in small set groups where the discussion topics are chosen by our pupils.

We have Poppy, our School Dog. Poppy is a hypoallergenic Cavapoo and is much loved by all pupils and brings happiness and wellbeing.

We have 'Inspiring Minds' and 'Nurturing Spirit' Weeks to celebrate all that makes Coworth Flexlands such a wonderful school environment. Our weeks are full of positivity, fun and engaging activities and inspiring.

We inspire and develop aspiration through an investigative curriculum.

We recognise that every child learns at a different pace and additional support is offered as needed. Our highly qualified Learning Support team works closely with teachers to identify any specific difficulties that may impact a pupil’s ability to learn. Through advice and one-to-one support, all pupils are able to fulfil their potential

Our Forest School is an inspiring process, a specialised approach to outdoor learning that aims to develop confidence and self esteem through hands-on learning in woodland environments.

We celebrate achievements both in and out of school with weekly Celebration Assemblies.

We inspire and develop aspiration through an investigative curriculum.

Outdoor Learning and Classrooms -  Learning outside is not only beneficial to students' wellbeing, but it's a great way to renew their enthusiasm for learning.

We give positive praise using growth mindset strategies.

We encourage pupils to share ideas and creations in various school projects, such as lunch menu ideas, buying new playground equipment, voting on and selecting our ‘charity of the year’.

We encourage physical activity and mindfulness for healthy minds and bodies. Our ‘Wednesday well-being walk’ has been popular with pupils – for a mental refresh and to explore nature which has a positive impact on well-being.

We are committed to healthy eating in school and aim to educate our pupils by providing interactive and engaging food workshops and celebrate food week.

As an Eco-School, our Eco-Schools Programme is pupil-led, involving hands-on learning that gets the whole school and the wider community involved in exciting environmental projects, including a Bio-Diversity project in conjunction Royal Holloway University.

Our Social Committee are an important part of our school community. They bring together parents and children to organise and take part in a number of exciting events throughout the year.

We encourage our pupils to spread kindness. We have a kindness board for pupils to add ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ they have done or received.

We are committed to having a strong community Involvement

We give everyone a voice. Pupils, parents and staff. In Year 6, pupils are given an additional responsibility of taking on an Ambassador role in areas they are passionate about or have asked to represent, for example ‘Art Captain’, ‘Nursery Captain’, ‘Nurturing Spirit Captain’ and ‘Sports Captain’ to name a few. Parents, staff and pupils complete feedback forms about specific areas of improvement as well as annual surveys which are shared and whole school plans actioned accordingly.

We encourage pupils to take on positions of responsibility and be positive role models. Prep pupils represent the school at events such as Open Mornings and give prospective parents tours of the school, sharing their experiences which builds confidence and strong social skills. Reception children are paired up with a ‘buddy’ in Year 5. Year 5 write their buddies a letter with information about school life and themselves, help them to understand playground rules and encourage them to play nicely with children in Pre-Prep. They also attend special events and story time where they read to the Reception pupils.

We encourage confidence, resilience, positive relationships, support and development through interventions such as coaching, individual learning plans and training sessions for staff and pupils.
