The move to Reception is an exciting time for the children.
Our girls and boys moving up from Skylark Nursery will be delighted to arrive into their new classroom having already been taught by Miss Engley, their Reception teacher. Children who join us from other local settings will have also met Miss Engley, on the occasion of their transition visit and all make new friends on their Taster days.
Wearing school uniform, being assigned to one of the four School Houses and playing in the ‘big’ playground all enrich their feeling of belonging to the school and forming friendships across the years.
In Reception we continue with the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum whilst taking the children further with their learning to encompass conceptual understanding that helps accelerate progress in Year 1 and beyond. The specialist subjects taught in Nursery, such as music, PE and computing continue, with the addition of french lessons. The teaching ethos continues to be fun, varied and stimulating within a nurturing environment.
In Years 1 and 2 lessons are mainly led by the class teacher, aided by a skilled teaching assistant. In these years the seeds of ‘thinking and reasoning skills’ are sown and enhance verbal and non-verbal reasoning abilities for the prep years ahead. Specialist teaching is extended to include science and drama and the number of clubs on offer broadens.
By the time the children leave Year 2 they work independently, are keen learners, socially responsible, confident in their friendships and ready for the move to Prep. Our boys leave, aged seven, well prepared to continue their educational journey in their chosen prep schools. Our girls transition confidently and smoothly into Coworth Flexlands’ Prep years, securely on the path towards an excellent senior school.
