Sport for All

At Coworth-Flexlands School we strive to provide and maintain excellent sporting facilities for our pupils. Over recent years the School has increased the number of sporting opportunities and pupils enjoy in excess of the Government’s recommended two hours a week. Through an extensive programme of lessons, lunchtime, weekend and holiday clubs, sports now on offer include netball, swimming, athletics, rounders, lacrosse, football, hockey, gymnastics, tennis, circuit-training, modern dance, ballet and tap.

In the Early Years, children learn to participate and enjoy sport through exploration. As they progress through the school, skills are developed further and by the time they reach Years 4, 5 and 6 these skills are refined. Control, coordination and mobility are excellent, achieved through the aesthetic and creative mediums of Gymnastics and Dance

All pupils find a lasting sense of purpose, achievement and fulfilment in physical activity. They are introduced to a wide variety of activities in Physical Education lessons and through extra-curricular sport. They develop positive attitudes to physical endeavour including perseverance, fair play and sporting behaviour and are able to cope with success and failure in a positive maner. Our pupils can recognise and describe the effect that exercise has on the functions of the body and they understand the benefits of regular exercise.

Match Reports

At Coworth-Flexlands School, we believe that a ‘healthy body is a healthy mind’ - a premise supported by a wealth of empirical evidence demonstrating how sport and physical activity have a positive effect on learning performance. We feel that participation in both individual and team sports fosters important life skills - building confidence, learning self respect and respect for others, promoting skills in endurance and appreciating the importance of cooperation and commitment.Through the forum of sport pupils also learn how to compete. We endeavour to provide all children with opportunities to participate in competitive events and any pupils who show talent in a sport will be encouraged to compete at team/county and/or national level.

The School enjoys extensive grounds which include new tennis and netball courts, an athletics track and hockey and football facilities. It also benefits from a large, fully equipped sports hall with a sprung floor. Never out of use, the hall hosts dance, gymnastics and circuit-training amongst other sporting activities. A Zumba class runs weekly. Swimming is also an important part of the curriculum for Years 3 to 6 and is undertaken at the nearby Woking Leisure centre.

Coworth-Flexlands School sports teams have been busy this year with the U10 and U11 netball teams competing in a successful series of matches and tournaments.

The swimming team has enjoyed notable success in qualifying at the National Level. Not only did they qualify for the Independent Association of Prep Schools National Swimming Finals in Crawley, Sussex where they came a very respectable 6th, but they also qualified for the English Schools Swimming Association Primary Schools National Team Championships which took place at the International Sports Centre in Sheffield in June. This is the 2nd year in a row that the team has qualified for these Finals.
