School Council
There has been a School Council at Coworth-Flexlands School since 2005.
How we organise our meetings
We want to run our meetings in the same way as other committees do, so the two Year 6 School Council Monitors become Madam Chairman (in charge of leading the meeting) and Secretary (in charge of taking notes, writing them up as ‘minutes’ and setting our ‘agenda’ for the next meeting).
Each person has a chance to speak when we have a discussion and we vote when we have to make a decision.

As School Councillors we are responsible for running these
meetings every other Wednesday. There are monitors each term for every
class from Year 1 upwards, but the Year 6 monitors remain the same throughout
the year. On the Wednesday
that we don’t have School Council we have a meeting with our headmistress,
Mrs Sweeney and discuss ideas raised by the council and try to make them
happen.
Elections
The way it works is that each class votes for two monitors but nobody can do it twice otherwise it would be unfair. Monitors talk to their class about our meetings and encourage more ideas.
Taking Actions
We are responsible for carrying out the ideas that have been agreed, such as planning discos, writing newspaper articles, or organising a talent contest! We’ve already decided that each term the class that has the most ideas will get an award and since then we’ve seen an extraordinary jump in ideas!
Recently, as you know Haiti had a disastrous Earthquake. To help, we raised money by holding a jeans mufti day and sent out two supply boxes containing mosquito nets, waterproof ponchos, waterproof ground mats, durable plastic box children’s activity pack, collapsible water containers and water purifying equipment, all this in a custom designed 10 person tent.
What we've acomplished
- We now have a brand new sandpit
- We now have blackboards in the gazebo
- Chunky Chalk - We also have chalk to use on the blackboards
- Class Balls-Each class has their own coloured ball for playtime
- Clean Wendy House - as you know, we have two wendy houses which are both now beautifully clean.
- We ordered larger bins for the cloakrooms and now there are a lot less paper towels on the floor.
- There is a Peace Garden where you can relax or read.
We hope you have learned more about School Council and we welcome new
monitors.
