Music
You learn so much from music - it is a way of perceiving the world, but it also gives you the instrument to forget the world.Andre Previn
All pupils are encouraged to participate in some form of music. Tuition is available in a wide variety of instruments, augmented by an instrumental hire scheme which encourages children of all abilities to play together in the Orchestra. The Orchestra performs many times during the year and individuals are entered into national exams achieving excellent results.
Music is taught across all three keystages by a specialist teacher in the Music room. Adult-led activities include Rhyme Time, Musical Maths, using instruments and listening to and singing along with CDs and DVDs. We also make musical instruments and explore sounds. There is a box of musical instruments in each room plus keyboards for the pupils to enjoy.
We ensure continuity and progression by using and adapting both the Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines and the Q C A schemes of work. Skills and musical concepts are built upon as children progress through the school. Progression in personal, instrumental performance begins with simple percussion, tuned percussion and recorder.

When appropriate, children are offered individual tuition by peripatetic teachers in a variety of instruments and are welcome to join instrumental groups and the orchestra. Vocal progression is developed over the Key Stages in class and through productions, various choirs and small groups. End of Key Stage targets are in place and gifted and talented pupils are extended through orchestra and choirs.
Music programs such as the Sibelius software for Primary schools - Groovy Shapes, Groovy Jungle and Groovy City plus Dance Ejay in Key Stage 2 enrich the Music curriculum. Using ICT, presentations are given on composers that have been researched by pupils in Key Stage 2.
