Learning Support
A child with additional learning needs learns differently. Learning support appreciates these differences in building on a child's strengths to overcome difficulties.
All children have individual needs, most of which can be met within the normal environment of the classroom through a differentiated curriculum. The needs of a small number of pupils cannot be met fully without additional support & this is offered as an integral part of the school's provision.
At Coworth-Flexlands Preparatory School we aim to identify all children who need special consideration to enhance their physical, social, emotional or intellectual development.
We ensure that these children are given appropriate support to allow them full access to the curriculum so that they are well integrated into all the activities of the school. Some pupils require individual tuition, others are taught in small groups. Children requiring additional support include those of exceptional talent as well as those with specific learning differences.

Although the number of children with diagnosed special needs is small, Learning Support is integral to our teaching. Our Head of Learning Support leads a team that provides assistance in the classroom including a literacy support teacher who works with individuals and groups as appropriate.
We offer specialist support for a number of specific conditions such as dyslexia as well as providing support for children who are experiencing a degree of difficulty with a particular aspect of their learning. For example a young child who has not yet acquired a firm grasp of phonics and needs to revisit certain sounds. Another example might be someone who has missed a vital element of Mathematics and cannot move forward. Some children simply need a little more time to become confident in some subjects.
In addition, we offer academic support clubs as pupils progress through the school towards examinations for senior school entry.
Our aim is to create an environment which enables children to work with confidence and fulfil their potential.
