French

French

The primary aim of the Modern Foreign Languages programme is to motivate students to continue their study of foreign languages beyond the Primary level.

This is done by sparking an ongoing interest in other cultures & by encouraging the use of fundamental language skills without inhibition in a fun, practical & relaxed atmosphere.

French is taught from Reception to Year 6. Oral work, listening skills & vocabulary acquisition are important for all year groups & the children become comfortable with the sounds of the French language within a conversational context before embarking upon the intricacies of the written language in Years 3 - 6.

To that end, the teacher speaks almost exclusively in French & uses songs, games, activities, rhymes, videos, cartoons, interactive websites, flash cards, role play, children’s books & magazines to depict relevant topics.

In Year 6, girls have acquired a sound knowledge of basic grammar & vocabulary, & are well prepared for senior school.

International Day

Familiarity with different countries, languages & cultures provides the foundation for global understanding & respect for each other.

On International Day we celebrate many of the cultures represented at Coworth-Flexlands School, as children from Reception to Year 6 participate in the celebration & an international menu is served for lunch.

Each classroom is the ‘host location’ for one or more countries. Regional art work, music & crafts are displayed & students ‘visit' several countries on a specific schedule during the course of the day.

International Day Assembly

All year groups (Rec-Y6) play an active part in the Assembly. The programme includes cultural displays, recitation of poems, dances, spoken demonstrations of foreign languages, guest musicians & guest speakers. To enhance the atmosphere of the event, the school hall is decorated with multicultural decorations.

Guest Speakers and Musicians this year:

Dr. Yang Ling (Republic of China)
Miss Olivia Reed (Quest Overseas)
