English

Using a variety of activities, pupils develop their skills in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing -the components of National Curriculum English. They invariably reach a level beyond its requirements.

From the very beginning, secure basic language skills ensure an ability to undertake independent learning. A love of literature is fostered, as are questioning and challenging points raised. In addition to learning to express themselves clearly and effectively, we encourage pupils to take pleasure in writing, reading, discussing and celebrating their own work, whether it be in writing stories, producing poetry or any other piece of literature.

Encouraging a love of books is central to the teaching of English. During their time in Pre-Prep, children's reading is closely monitored by their teachers and this continues in the Prep department with extra help given when deemed necessary.
