Sports

Sport forms an important part of school life at Coworth Flexlands from the day your child arrives. All pupils experience a wide variety of sport through their PE, dance and games lessons boosted by extra-curricular opportunities. The emphasis is on developing skills from Nursery upwards to equip every child to take part in competitive sports as they mature. The skills of teamwork, communication, concentration, stamina, winning and losing all aid a healthy body and mind.

The aim is to offer a sufficiently wide range of sports so that every child, boy or girl, can find a sporting passion whether or not they are talented in the traditional team sports. This allows them to develop a real sense of sporting achievement and a lifelong love of a sport. Continual assessment of pupils’ achievement is measured to the same degree of attention as core academic subjects.

The PE focus for children aged 3 to 7 is to learn a range of basic skills aimed at developing movement vocabulary, agility, balance, coordination, ball skills and general fitness. Lessons take place in our well equipped, purpose-built sports hall and on our playing fields.

When pupils reach 7 years old they begin to develop sports specific skills, increasing the frequency of training. Teams host and visit other schools for fixtures, as well as competing in county and national school tournaments.  Sport is held in our extensive grounds which boast hard courts for tennis, netball and hockey, dedicated football pitches and an extensive space for athletics, rounders, cross country and Sports Day. Our sports hall ensures that sport happens, whtaever the weather. Swimming takes place at one of the senior schools popular with Year 6 leavers.

The school comes together for the numerous inter-house sports activities and the annual Sports Day. Every fourth year our Sports Day becomes an Olympiad, to coincide with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

All children are taught by our specialist sports teachers supplemented by additional sport specific coaches. The sports programme is built into the day’s timetable as we believe interludes of physical exercise improve the ability to learn and focus. The sporting experience at Coworth Flexlands ensures all children go onto their future schools well prepared for many more years of sport, with several children securing an A squad place in their first term.
