Year 3

Butser Ancient Farm

One day we went to Butser Farm.
We made some wattle and daub houses and had so much fun.

Alan told us about the house, then we went to make wattle and daub. We crushed stones to make it into fine powder, Then, some people scraped the fine powder and poured it into a wheelbarrow full of mud.

Our school had a long journey to Butser Ancient Farm and we had a lot of fun.

Year 3 went to Butser Ancient Farm on Wednesday 19th June. It took 1 hour on the coach, but at last we saw the sign. We got out of the coach and met Alan, and he took us to the round houses from the Iron Age. They had rebuilt them and copied them.

What it looked like during building

The best part  about  Butser  farm  was when we made wattle and daub and we built  a fence.

By Siobhan

We saw a goat called toast and his friend was called Marmite.
We saw little sheep with fluffy coats.

By Phoebe

There was a very kind man named Alan and he showed us how to weave a fence with sticks. Of course we had to put our boots on. We saw some sheep, and a goat called Toast.

People that were archaeologists had dug up broken pottery and bones. They sometimes found remains of Viking clothes. That’s how they know what they wore in the Iron Age.

By Camilla

We did some wooden fence weaving. We used hazel rods and wove in and out, in and out and so on. Jessie had the longest rod.

My favourite things about Butser Ancient Farm were when we made wattle and daub and went to the shop. In the shop there was a lot of jewellery, a statue of one of the round houses and a jewellery case

By Tamsin

After lunch we went to the little shop and bought some gifts. Then we were shown by Alan to a pit divided into sections by rope. Alan had put things in it so we could dig them out, to feel how he did when he made discoveries. The reason why Alan and  other people were on the farm was because they were all archaeologists, and they wanted to discover more about the Romans.

We had a great time at Butser!
